1960s Accessories on the Silver Screen

Yes, we’re all mad about the costume on Mad Men, but its not our only reminder of glamourous 60′s style, and Joan’s signature pen necklace is only a tiny ornament in the grand scheme of mod accessories.

Do they look as good when they’re on, or only when they’re taking them off?

Every detail in “A Single Man” reminds us that Tom Ford directed it.

Clearly no surprise that this hat is still in style.

Ok, so ‘Sabrina’ was made in the 50s, but it’s my favorite movie of all time , and it marks the beginning of Hepburn’s work with Hubert Givenchy. Plus, it’s an unusual hat. Though this film won Best Costume, the award went to Edith Head, who only designed Sabrina’s two simple frocks, while the little-known Givenchy did the rest.

… I think we should also count liquid eyeliner as an accessory for this article’s purposes.

If you don’t own a pair of classic stud earrings, I highly recommend rifling through your family’s heirloom jewelry or swinging into the next vintage or antique shop you pass.

More Inspiration

“How To Steal A Million” and “Charade” are my top picks for the incredible Givenchy & Audrey Hepburn style partnership. Hepburn’s outfit in this scene in amazing.  It’s also quite funny, because her character is trying to go incognito and this haute ensemble is anything but.

There are so many beautiful costume choices in “An Education”. It’s hard to pick just one image to represent it.

Twiggy and Her Tie
Twiggy in a huge clown-tie. Obviously she can rock whatever she wants.

In an era when details mattered and experimentation prevailed in many forums, it’s not surprising that fashion was amongst them.  While you may not be able to pull-off Anna Karina’s Harry Potter spectacles or Twiggy’s Bozo tie, accessories are there to add to our look and say a little something more about us. Give it a try!
